The 27 Amendments
1st Amendment - Freedom of religion, speech, assembly,press, and petition
EX: You can decide your own religion, speak freely and press, and petition your opinions.
2nd Amendment - Right to bear arms
EX: If you have a legal weapon you can use it to protect yourself.
3rd Amendment - Restrict the quartering of troops
EX: The government can't force troops to live with you against your will.
4th Amendment - Unreasonable searches and seizures
EX: Someone can not just look through your things, without a proper warrant.
5th Amendment - Life, liberty,property, Due process of law = double jeopardy, self - incrimination, and government seizure of property
EX: Everybody has there on rights and can't be tried twice without knowing what there being incriminated with.
6th Amendment - Speedy and public trial
EX: Everyone has a right to a speedy trial
7th Amendment - Jury trial
EX: No matter what your charged with you have a right to a jury trial.
8th Amendment - Cruel and unusual punishment
EX: The police cannot sentence you to death or beat you.
9th Amendment - All rights not spelled out are "retained by the people" (Natural rights)
EX: Everyone has "natural rights".
10th Amendment - Powers not given to the nation or the states belong to the people
EX: The 10th amendment protects the people from all powerful government.
11th Amendment - Federal courts can't force states to be sued without state's consent
EX: The 11th amendment protects the states from getting sued by citizens or other states.
12th Amendment - Election of VP and president separately in electoral college
EX: The 12th amendment prevents problems in the elections.
13th Amendment - Abolished slavery
EX: It's against the law to have slave a human being.
14th Amendment - Citizenship to all persons born or naturalized in the U.S. Also prevented states from taking people's rights away
EX: If born in the U.S, you get automatic citizenship.
15th Amendment - Everyone has the right to vote (Esp. African American)
EX: Anyone can vote for who they want at elections.
16th Amendment - Income Tax
EX: Anyone getting income gets back income tax at the end of the year.
17th Amendment - The people instead of the states elects senators
EX: The people get to vote on senators instead of states.
18th Amendment - Prohibition
EX: It is illegal to drink alcohol.
19th Amendment - (1920) Gave women the right to vote
EX: If you are a woman you can vote when it is time for elections.
20th Amendment - Set election and inauguration times closer to one another
EX:The elections would not have been set closer if this article had not been ratified.
21st Amendment - Appealed prohibition
EX: If you are of age you can drink alcohol
22nd Amendment - 2 term limit on presidents (FDR)
EX: Gives the president a 2 year service and if re-elected you go for another two years.
23rd Amendment - Gave district of Columbia the right to vote (3 electors)
EX: The 23rd amendment gave Washington the right to vote for president and vice.
24th Amendment - (1964) Prohibits poll taxes
EX: Prohibiting poll taxes gave more rights to African Americans, women and the poor.
25th Amendment - Presidential Succession
EX: If the president leaves office for whatever every reason presidential succession takes place.
26th Amendment - Lowering voting age to 18
EX: If you are of the age 18 you can vote when it is time for elections.
27th Amendment - Congress could only increase its pay for next term
EX: If congress raises pay for themselves it does not go into effect until the new congress comes in.
